Marine Biology Students Study eDNA As Part of Coral Restoration Efforts
Dedicated to finding solutions to this issue is Dr. Esprit Saucier, assistant professor in the Faculty of Sciences at BYU–Hawaii. Since 2020 Dr. Saucier and students have developed a process of collecting water samples to test for environmental DNA (eDNA), genetic material obtained directly from environmental samples such as soil, sediment, or in this case, ocean water.
BYU–Hawaii Faculty and Students Embark on Marine Biology Expedition to Christmas Island
A team of faculty and student researchers from Brigham Young University–Hawaii recently embarked on a marine biology expedition to Kiritimati, or Christmas Island, Kiribati, from July 2 to July 9. Led by Dr. Esprit Saucier, associate professor in the Faculty of Sciences specializing in marine biology, the group included three dedicated students: Chase Allsup, Timeon Murdoch, and Caitlin Alder-Escabarte, accompanied by other members from the Faculty of Sciences, including Dr. Benjamin Jordan and Dr. Celine Duffau.

Seasider Spotlight: Daniel DeMartini
Current Projects/research taking place: There’s a lot of exciting science happening right now! My students are diving into a range of hands-on research projects — from studying deadly mushrooms in the mountains behind campus to exploring the unique properties of octopus egg cement and sea urchin pigments.
Seasider Spotlight: Spencer Ingley
I'm currently working on a project to restore a patch of indigenous Hawaiian forest at the back of the BYU–Hawaii campus. We are using this area to train students in restoration ecology and host groups from the university and the community to learn about the value of Indigenous ecosystems.
Seasider Spotlight: Esprit Saucier
I’m currently working on… a project/experiment that changes the color of mole crabs (locally known as ‘sand turtles') to a non-natural color.
Seasider Spotlight: Brad Smith
One project I’m currently working on… is monitoring reef ecosystems for environmental DNA. My colleagues and I are working on this to detect the invasive coconut rhinoceros beetle. This project is done to either detect invasives early or conduct biomonitoring.
