Mentored Research in Health and Human Science

From Campus to Conference: BYU–Hawaii Students Take Research to Korea

Earlier this month, BYU–Hawaii students traveled to Korea to present their original research on an international stage during the 2025 World Congress on Kinesiology & Sport Science conference focused on healthy living.

Accompanied and mentored by professors Joel Reece and Ben Chase, the students gave it their all in sharing their findings and competing to win alongside representatives from various other universities.

MENTORS

All students majoring in the program of Health and Human Science are encouraged to consider their own scientific and research interests, meet with and learn about the research interests of the faculty, and then decide who would they like to choose as their mentor.

Seasider Spotlight: Joel Reece

What projects are you currently working on: Students in our HHS research class are beginning a study called Project T.H.R.I.V.E. This stands for transforming health through resilience, inclusiveness, values, and evaluation. Phase one of the project is to do a student health assessment of physical health, wellness, presenteeism, resilience, and nutrition.

What sparked my interest in my field… is helping people become better. I'm passionate about problem-solving, which is why I pursued a PhD in research. My goal is to enhance people’s happiness and happiness is closely linked to one’s emotional well-being. How you feel is deeply influenced by your lifestyle and the choices you make. I strive to assist individuals in improving their decision-making and overall quality of life.
