RESEARCH INTERESTS AND PROJECTS

My research interests broadly focus on ecological restoration, freshwater ecology, conservation, and the human dimensions of environmental science. Much of my current work centers on restoring native Hawaiian ecosystems and exploring how ecological research, education, and community engagement can contribute to environmental stewardship.

A major focus of my research is the BYU–Hawaii ecological restoration project, where students help restore native vegetation and stream habitat on campus. Associated research examines native plant establishment, invasive species management, habitat restoration, wildlife responses, and methods for monitoring and controlling invasive mammals such as mongoose. I am also interested in Hawaiian stream ecology, particularly how land use, water management, and habitat modification influence freshwater ecosystems and their restoration.

Another area of my research examines the human dimensions of science and conservation, including science communication, environmental attitudes and behaviors, belonging in science, and the integration of Indigenous and place-based knowledge into science education and environmental stewardship.
